The Sandgrund Lars Lerin art gallery is housed in a legendary, in Sweden that is, former restaurant/dancehall overlooking the Klara river. The big, bright 1960s ‘Sandgrund’ sign on the white building speaks volumes about its past function. Where dancers used to bop, you can let your senses dance to the tune of Lars Lerin’s works.

About the artist

Born in 1954 in Munkfors, just north of Karlstad, both in the province of Värmland, Lars Lerin is one of Sweden’s most famous artists. His works have been exhibited on their own, or as part of joint exhibitions in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, Germany and the US. The artist describes his works as; ‘what I see in my surroundings and when I travel’. Lerin is hugely popular in Sweden and is fast approaching ‘national treasure’ status.

Sandgrund Lars Lerin art gallery is a must if you are visiting Karlstad.

The content of the retrospective exhibition contains watercolours and oils, collages, graphic art and photographs. Lerin is a great traveller and previous exhibitions have included scenes from Arctic, the Antarctic, Iceland, India, Iran, Norway, Scotland and Siberia. Or perhaps even local scenes of Munkfors and surroundings.

Sandgrund also has a room called The white room which is reserved for a guest exhibitor. The works will change every year, so keep coming back.

This new art gallery also have a café offering fantastic views of the river Klarälven. Sandgrund became an icon of 1960s modern architecture in Sweden and abroad and until recently was a nightclub/restaurant. In its heyday in the 1980s dancers from all over Sweden and Norway came here to enjoy Swedish dance band music.
